B12 Factor contains methylated vitamin B12 and folic acid along with Intrinsic Factor and pepsin for enhanced absorption and utilization. This unique, high quality formula contains the most biologically active form of vitamin B12: methylcobalamin. Vitamin B12 and folic acid are helpful in certain cases of anemia. Intrinsic factor is produced by the parietal cells of the stomach and is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12 from the small intestine. Intrinsic factor can be negatively affected in pernicious anemia, atrophic gastritis, bariatric surgery, and pancreatic diseases that lead to insufficient enzyme production.
Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system creates antibodies that lead to intrinsic factor deficiency, malabsorption of vitamin B12, and subsequent anemia. Pepsin, a digestive enzyme, further enhances the opportunity for proper absorption of vitamins.
Cardiovascular Health
Several B vitamins enhance cardiovascular health. Folic acid may improve symptoms of peripheral arterial disease and intermittent claudication.Folic acid and Vitamin B12 have been shown to lower homocysteine levels. People with high homocysteine and osteoporosis may reduce incidence of fractures by taking folic acid and vitamin B12. Patients with diabetes treated with metformin may benefit from supplementation with folic acid and vitamin B12 to improve circulation in the small arteries.*
Nervous System & Emotional Health
Many B vitamins are involved in nerve regeneration, neurotransmitter synthesis, nerve transmission, and other elements of nervous system health. For instance, Vitamin B12 can alleviate symptoms of depression in some people. Those with celiac disease might benefit from supplementation with B12 and folic acid, among other vitamins, to help with depression.Warning: For clients with pernicious anemia: as with all preparations containing intrinsic factor, resistance may develop in some cases of pernicious anemia to the absorption of physiologic doses of vitamin B12 with intrinsic factor . If resistance occurs, parenteral therapy, or oral therapy with higher doses of vitamin B12 with intrinsic factor may be necessary for adequate treatment of the patient with pernicious anemia. Periodic clinical and laboratory studies are considered essential and are recommended for all patients with pernicious anemia, particularly those using medications or supplements with intrinsic factor.
